Location
Cotulla is a city whose citizens are working towards a community that is economically and socially diversified. In the past few years Cotulla has accomplished many goals. The city now owns and operates the Cotulla A. B. Alexander Convention Center. La Salle County is developing county-owned land adjacent to the Convention Center. Both locations are ideal and located on the IH-35 corridor.
Cotulla, the “hub city” of the Winter Garden South Texas Brush Country, is surrounded by sprawling cattle ranches and fertile farmland.
Cotulla-La Salle County is strategically located 70 miles north of Laredo and Romantic Mexico and 85 miles south of cosmopolitan San Antonio, halfway between Del Rio and Corpus Christi, and straddles the famed South Texas Brush Country and the Texas Winter Garden agricultural region. Interstate Highway 35 runs North-South through the county astride the primary North-South trade corridor serving the emerging North American Trade Zone. Running through the county is the main North-South trunk line of the Union Pacific rail line.
Climate
The climate is mild, with an average temperature in the low 70’s, is ideal for winter
guests seeking relief from northern winters. In Spring and Summer, prevailing Gulf of Mexico breezes bring cool nights and refreshing showers. Fall and Winter are very mild and made more pleasant in La Salle County by geothermal-warmed municipal water. The air is fresh and unpolluted.
Recreation
The terrain in La Salle County is a mixture of flat grazing lands, brusada (brush country), river valleys and rolling hills with Mesquite, Pecan, Oak, Ash, Willow, Retama and Huisache trees. In the brusada there are many varieties of brush, cacti, and wild flowers. Two rivers cross the county; the historic Nueces River, named for Pecan trees along its banks, and the Frio River, named for its icy spring water. Fisherman can explore the banks of the Nueces River for bass and catfish.
La Salle County has an international reputation for its hunting and fishing. The brusada supports an abundance of deer, wild hogs, turkey, javalina, dove, quail, and other wild game. Outdoor recreation is a major element in the county’s economy and lifestyle. La Salle County is a hunter’s paradise.
During the second weekend in March each year, our County Fair, Parade and Wild Hog Cook-Off are held. There are activities for everyone to enjoy during this four day event. The Wild Hog Cook-Off is great fun for both spectator and participant. A wild hog scramble has been added for children and is an event you must see!! Miss La Salle County Fair Queen is chosen around this time and represents our county in various events throughout the year.
Tourism is generated by hunting and fishing, outdoor recreational facilities, annual festivals and rodeos, historic sites, retail establishments, museums and highway traffic. Forty-five miles of the IH 35 corridor lie in La Salle County.
Little League Baseball, lighted tennis courts, Scout organizations, 4-H Club, numerous Civic Clubs and Churches provide outlets for community service and personal growth. Alexander Memorial Library offers a wide assortment of reading materials for information and pleasure.
The La Salle County Brush Museum has a wonderful collection of pictures and artifacts that date back to the late 1800’s. One visitor noted in the register, “a great walk through the history of Cotulla.” The museum is located on S. Stewart Street. Front Street has many historical buildings with interesting stories behind them. One building used to be the old Cotulla Saloon where short story writer O. Henry would sip on his red-eye in the 1800’s.
We invite you to consider Cotulla as a location for your industrial and service business... as a place to visit for a week or a winter... or as a place to call home for a lifetime!
Highways
Cotulla is ideally situated on IH 35, 70 miles North of Laredo, the largest port of entry into Mexico on the Texas border, and 85 miles South of San Antonio. At Cotulla, Highway 97 leads East from IH 35 to the port of Corpus Christi, the deepest port on the Gulf Coast.
La Salle County has one of the best maintained and most extensive Farm to Market systems in Texas. Farm to Market roads in the county include 468, 469, 133, 624, 863 and 3408.
Air Service
The Cotulla-La Salle County Airport offers a full complement of aviation services to a wide range of aircraft, including business jets and turboprops. An instrument approach (the best in 60 miles), an FSS Remote Communications Outlet and National Weather Service observations at the airport make this an all-weather airport.
The airport has recently been completely reconstructed, to include a runway that has been lengthened to 4,995 feet. A new lighting system, a deer-proof fence, enlarged aircraft parking areas, and paved access roads complement the airport.
The airport is situated on 267 acres, much of which is available and suitable for
commercial development. Located approximately one mile Northeast of Cotulla, its Southern boundary Texas Highway 97 and its Northwest boundary approximately one-quarter mile from both Interstate 35 and the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, make this airport an ideal site for many diverse businesses.
Railroads
Although agriculture has long been the mainstay of the area, recent oil and gas
exploration and production have contributed significantly to the economy. Cotulla is located on the main line of the Missouri-Pacific Railroad and is served by three motor freight companies.
The Missouri-Pacific Railroad (Mo-Pac) maintains one major rail link in La Salle county. The main line from San Antonio to Laredo runs North-South parallel to IH 35. Depending upon the anticipated volume of business, the railroad will pay all or part of the cost of constructing railroad sidings to connect with this rail line.
